Now you may think that this post has something to do with the war in Iraq or the suicide bombers in Afghanistan – wrong.
There we were, husband dearest and me, trying desperately to beat the “Dubai bulge” by jogging (if you can call my “hop, skip” a jog) at Safa Park, Dubai. In the midst of Dubai’s concrete warzone, Safa Park brings welcome relief to us expats, South Africans particular, who long for the greenery of home.
Anyway, I’ve digressed. So, there we were, huffing and puffing – and perspiring like there was no tomorrow (jogging in 38 degree heat would do that to you, right?) when all at once, a police van turns up and out comes a shiny, black, metallic cannon! Did someone violate another law in Dubai? Had the war on terror finally arrived in the UAE? Questions, questions. Then suddenly someone announced that it was 6.49pm and the officer stoically fired a single, ear piercing shot into the sky!Yes, the first fast of Ramadan was over. It was time for Iftar (the first meal after sunset).
We resumed our punishing jog, the police officer promptly packed his gear away and the curious onlookers went about their business. Ah – life in Dubai, full of surprises indeed! Ramadan Kareem!
